The new “shoot-out” format for the 21st Annual Caloosa Catch and Release proved to be a big hit! Over 40 teams gathered from all around Southwest Florida from June 3rd – 6th 2010 on Fort Myers Beach at the Pink Shell Beach Resort and Spa to fish. Each day over 12 places were paid out to the teams that won either first, second or third for the largest Redfish, Snapper, Trout or Flounder. If an angler had a nice Flounder or Snapper, it really helped put that team in the lead for the over-all first place paid position for top team of the CCR.
The new format and rules were explained by Al Fernandez giving Captains and anglers a chance to ask questions at the Captains Meeting on Thursday night where a nice dinner was served and drinks flowed.
Friday was the first day of fishing and definitely a typical day of fishing the Caloosa; very windy! All teams roughed the weather and fished hard to bring back an impressive 173.8lbs of fish to be weighed and released. Team Lowrance – Skeeter with anglers Steve Mathews, Shepard Tucker and Gary Walker won first place for their 7.5lb Redfish, Organized Chaos led by Capt. Jimmy Burnsed won largest Trout at 3.2lbs, Team Rip Saw won largest Snapper with a very impressive 6.5lbs and team Reel Chaos won largest Flounder at 1.9lbs with anglers Michael Smith, Kem Smith, Chris Niles and Robert Belair. Let’s just say that Weighmasters Bob Wasno and Lonnie Carson were kept very busy weighing and releasing so many fish, while all of the spectators were very entertained!
Later that night anglers, sponsors, friends and family gathered for the auction poolside. There was a silent auction that included rods, art, jewelry, fishing equipment, sunglasses, golf foursomes and much more! Professional auctioneer Scott Robertson called the live auction which included many weekend “stay”cations paired with local guides ½ day fishing charters, a power pole, trolling motor, 2 Yahama motors, a weeklong trip to South Seas Resort and of course, the beagle puppy that was just adorable!
Saturday made for another windy day but 177lbs of fish beat the first day of fishing. The shoot-out format allowed for teams to still have a shot to win prize money even if they zeroed out the first day. The team with the heaviest Redfish on day two was team Flounder, Really?! Flounder with a huge 7.8lb fish, team Reel Chaos won again for largest Trout at 3.4lbs, Team Rip Saw won for largest Snapper weighing in at 5lbs and team Hooters #2 came in with Captain Chris Wittman, Mitch Williamson, Ashley Barns and Jamie Strowig with the largest Flounder weighing 4.7lbs. The coveted first place spot went to team Rip Saw: Ryan Millican, Kyle Potts and Chris Magnano who had a 6.5lb Snapper on the first day and a 5lb Snapper on the second day, bringing their grand total to 20.9lbs. placing, them in first place. Not far behind was Captain Jimmy Burnsed, Patrick Field, Clark Smith and Scot Hudson fishing team Organized Chaos with 19.6lbs. of total weight. Greg Todd and Matt Hamilton from team JM Todd won the Hooter’s Redfish Bonanza with a total of 14.6lbs of Redfish. Sherry Hale from team Yankee Dooley and the Dandies won the ladies division with 16.6lbs of fish and 8 year old Jake Sonn from team Sonn won the youth division with 6.8lbs of fish.
Needless to say the awards dinner Saturday night was full of trophy and check presentations. The prestigious Caloosa Sportsman’s Award was given out to two very deserving recipients: Al Fernandez and Fran Podraza.
Special thanks to all of our sponsors, staff and Florida Gulf Coast University Interns who made this event such a huge success!
